Blast-Off: The Birth of Space Mountain
The story of Space Mountain begins with Walt Disney himself. Inspired by the success of the Matterhorn Bobsleds at Disneyland in 1959, Walt dreamed of a space-themed roller coaster that would simulate an interstellar voyage. However, the technology of the 1960s wasn’t quite ready to bring his vision to life. It wasn’t until Walt Disney World opened in 1971—offering more space (pun intended!)—that Imagineers dusted off the plans and got to work.
Led by legendary Imagineer John Hench, construction began in 1972 on what would become the world’s first indoor roller coaster. With its sleek, futuristic design and groundbreaking computer-operated systems, Space Mountain was a marvel of innovation. On January 15, 1975, the attraction opened with a spectacular celebration featuring fireworks, a 2,000-piece marching band, and even NASA astronauts like Gordon Cooper and James Irwin on hand to mark the occasion.
A Starry Ride Through Time
Space Mountain has been delighting guests for generations with its thrilling dips and turns in near-total darkness. Riders zoom past glowing stars and cosmic projections on one of two tracks—Alpha or Omega—each offering a slightly different experience. While it feels like you’re rocketing through space at warp speed, the ride actually tops out at just 27 mph. (The wind effects make it feel much faster!)
Over the years, Space Mountain has undergone updates to keep it fresh while preserving its classic charm. In 2009, Magic Kingdom’s version received new track elements and synchronized music to enhance the experience. Yet its essence—a thrilling journey through outer space—remains timeless.
50 Years of Magic
To celebrate this golden milestone, Walt Disney World has pulled out all the stops. The festivities included a dazzling golden fireworks display over Tomorrowland and appearances by Mickey Mouse and Astronaut Donald Duck. Limited-edition merchandise like commemorative pins and apparel is flying off shelves faster than a rocket launch.
